Suzy had sworn off Tinder for good. Like Nick, she'd endured countless first dates and very few seconds. She'd been through the cycle of fruitless swiping, giving up on the prospect of meeting someone through an app on her phone, then letting small slivers of hope entice her into giving it another try a few months later. Thankfully, her good friend Gretchen was there to convince her to try one last time. Meanwhile, Nick was getting a little restless. He'd seen his best friends find the loves of their lives but grew ever fearful that the same might not happen for him. He'd used dating apps because he was shy and it was convenient, but he never really thought he'd meet his future wife online. Then he saw Suzy. He swiped right hoping two things: 1) that the beautiful woman currently on his screen was real, and 2) that if she was, that she would be into him as well. He had been in the Tinder game long enough to know how low the likelihood of those being true really was, so when he saw that he had somehow matched with her, he immediately showed off to all his roommates. After a couple weeks of not being able to meet because of prior plans, they had their first date up in Park City. Both of them breathed sighs of relief after seeing the other looked just like their pictures. They were seated at a table right in front of a TV showing the US Open, and Rafael Nadal - one of Suzy's favorite players - was playing, one of many good signs that evening. The conversation flowed easily and they talked about anything and everything, each feeling an unusual but welcome comfort with the other. Eventually it was time to leave, so Nick walked her to her car and asked when he could see her again. They made plans for the next week and then hugged goodbye (Nick saved the first kiss for the second date, a hike up to the Living Room above Salt Lake City at sunset). Once Nick and Suzy were in their cars, they both instantly called their friends to tell them how well it went!
Suzy had planned a trip for her and Nick to go to New York so that he could meet her 102-year-old grandmother and go to his first US Open. He had already bought the ring and was planning to propose on an upcoming trip to Iceland, but on his drive home from the jeweler, he had the idea to propose on their trip to New York. After telling Suzy's best friends and family about his plans, everything was set. On the morning of September 1st, Nick and Suzy got up early to go for a walk around Central Park. Nick had picked out the bridge on which he wanted to propose, only to see that when they arrived, there was another couple having an engagement photo shoot on the very same bridge! Not to be deterred, and with the plans already in place, he improvised and asked Suzy to take a photo of the pond from the bottom of the bridge while he got down on one knee. After she turned around and realized what was going on, Suzy said yes! She was then greeted by her parents, childhood best friend Ingrid and Ingrid's husband Rahul, as well as Nick's mother who had been hiding in a nearby tree to get the shot.
