Our Engagement Story

Bring your bear spray and a diamond ring...

The story starts when Nick revealed that he was custom designing a ring for Katelyn. Over the next few months, Nick would, unprompted, divulge progress on the ring, then accuse Katelyn of tricking him into spilling secrets. Nick and Katelyn joined Brittany and Pierre, Katelyn's sister and brother-in-law, on vacation in Glacier National Park in late April. Katelyn was starting to think Nick would propose on this vacation, but Nick told her the ring was not ready yet. It was very suspicious, then, that Nick, a self-admitted unobservant person, started asking Katelyn why she wasn't wearing the rings she typically wore on her left hand on the flight to Glacier. The second day of hiking, the group borrowed a can of bear spray from the hotel front desk, bought deli sandwiches, and drove to the east side of the national park (following a school bus going 70 mph). That day's trail was a challenging, snow-covered hike through the Rocky Mountains and glaciers. All four passed a sign at the start of the trail announcing that the trail was closed 1 mile ahead due to snow and ice and to expect bears - thankfully, Nick was carrying the bear spray. After several miles of breath taking views, snowy trails, and glacial lakes, they paused to enjoy lunch. Nick and Katelyn were each eating the same sandwich when Nick said to Katelyn, "is your sandwich spicy?" And she responded, "no, you're eating bear spray." The trail from this point on appeared even icier and more consistently snow-covered so Pierre advised against continuing on. Another option was a trail leading down to the ice-blue glacial lake, but another sign promised that just-emerged-from-hibernation bears would be searching for fish at the water's edge. With that Pierre pointed up the mountainside and Brittany took off up it. Katelyn and Nick followed, but at a more cautious pace. Ahead of them, Brittany blew the air horn to scare off possible bears. Nick and Katelyn kept hearing scuffling and branches breaking in the woods next to them. The increasingly steep terrain and continued mysterious noises made Katelyn want to turn around. She and Nick climbed to a lower rock to wait for Britt and Pierre. Feeling cowardly and like she had ruined an experience for Nick, Katelyn asked Nick, "Are you mad that I asked to turn around? Do you still want to marry me even though I chickened out?" Nick rolled his eyes and said, "I'm not mad and of course I still want to marry you." As Brittany and Pierre hiked down to meet them, Nick started trying to take pictures of them with the stunning scenery in the background. He then asked Brittany to take pictures of them, and after 1 or 2 pictures, Nick got down on one knee with a sparkling, beautifully designed diamond ring outstretched. Katelyn screamed, "wait, you're doing this right now?!?!" And Nick simply asked, "will you marry me?" Katelyn, with a huge smile, said, "yes!" and slipped the ring on while doing everything to not drop it. Katelyn did ask Nick to carry it back down since he safely carried it up. So that's how Katelyn and Nick decided to spend the rest of their lives together - on the side of a beautiful mountain in the Rocky Mountains hoping to not encounter a bear.
