Since high school, Nick and I would casually hang out with one another amongst our overlapping, fun-loving group of friends. Concerts, fall fairs, birthday parties for friends, etc. We always kept up with one another and see each other when we were both in town. We were even teased by friends that we would eventually fall in love and get married, but both of us would laugh it off. We liked the same music and being outdoors whenever possible, spending time with family and friends, and putting in hard work into everything we do. After many months of playing cat and mouse, Nick surprised me for my birthday by driving 4.5 hours from Tulsa, just to get a dance with the birthday girl. It literally took my breath away! Later that evening on the drive back to his house, he confessed what I already knew and we swore to each other then that no matter the distance, we would at least give it all to properly date and see how it went. Almost a year later of dating (and an amazing adventure to Mexico with friends), I made the decision to move to Tulsa so that I could be close to my best friend. Everyone knew we were made for each other, it just took us a little time to figure it out!
Nick and I have had the opportunity to travel with each other over the last two years and in doing so, we have seen some pretty amazing sights. In march of this year, we took a trip to California and drove up the Pacific Coast Highway. Up to Moonstone Beach in Cambria, Monterey Bay, back down through the San Joaquin Valley. So romantic and a time that any girl would expect to get a marriage proposal! Little did I know that this trip was part of Nick's plan. A week after we got back home from vacation, we met my parents for lunch to tell them all about our trip and all of the wonderful things we got to see and do. Our drive home was normal but I could tell Nick wasn't "feeling well" and after a stop at the grocery store, he wanted to "just get home and rest...take a walk down to the lake". When we got home, Nick unloaded groceries and I went to change into something comfortable. I came around the corner to find Nick very nervous so I asked him what was wrong (still thinking he did not feel well). He grabbed my hands and said, "Are you going to walk in those clothes?!? Oh goodness, never mind!! I just can't wait. Abbey, please say you'll marry me so I can stop being so nervous!" Shocked and totally caught off guard, I said "YES!" And the rest of our story continues.
