Nick and Madeleine met in Washington, DC, at a party hosted by Madeleine's friend Jerry from her improv team. Madeleine wasn't sure if she was at the right house so she spoke to the first person she saw which just so happened to be Nick. His band, Dr. Horsedoctor, was playing an acoustic set at the party, and Madeleine's improv troupe, the Flying Funny Bones, was performing too! Madeleine couldn't help but notice Nick's curly bleached blonde hair, his septum piercing, and his aura which was like sunshine. During his set, Nick shouted out Madeleine, and the two of them circled each other the entire party before meeting up at the backyard bonfire at the end of the night. Nick was struck by the fact that Madeleine had lived in the same neighborhood in Pittsburgh that his mom had grown up in (shout out to Squirrel Hill), her love of Chicago deep dish pizza, and her obsession with the Laurel Canyon music scene of the 1960s. Nick asked Madeleine out for a post-party pizza date. Madeleine, trying to play it cool, turned him down. Nick then asked if Madeleine would go out for pizza with him two days later and she happily accepted. They went out to Duccini's in Adams Morgan for their first date and haven't left each other's side since.
