Nick & Bec met at Sorrento’s Italian restaurant on July 24th for their first date. They had started talking online just after the 4th of July and were eager to finally meet in person. After a successful first and second date, Nick invited Bec over for dinner (which he cooked!) at his place to meet his two sons, Nicky (13) and JJ (11). Nick asked Bec if he could kiss her, and after a positive response, handed her a Hershey’s Kiss. You can find Kisses sprinkled around their apartment. And Bec’s cats absolutely adore Nick, and sometimes prefer snuggling with him over Bec—she’s not upset about that at all. Nick was able to meet Bec’s parents in an October trip to SoCal for a work conference with some vacation time added on for Halloweekend—Bec’s annual long weekend where she attends any and all Halloween events she can find, and Nick thoroughly enjoyed his time at all the mazes. He fully embraces Bec’s love of all things Halloween & scary movies. Nick is terribly underexposed to movies/shows, so Bec has created a list he must watch (so that he understands all her references, of course) and they are slowly making their way through the list (usually adding at least 1 movie for each movie they cross off). Some favorites they’ve watched so far include: My Cousin Vinny, Down Periscope (both McDorman family classics!), Tales from the Crypt, and of course, Schitt’s Creek. When Bec travels for work, they use Kast to watch movies together in the evenings. They have discovered a mutual love for puzzles and have tackled more than 20 so far (with many more planned from a Goodwill haul). They’ve also been playing a card game called Servd, where they each get different cards to play against the other that requires them to do a task—for example, Nick had to cook Bec dinner, a recipe of her choice. Bec had to give Nick compliments, one per minute for 15 minutes. It’s a fun game and they’re eager to play more cards. Cooking together has become something they now both enjoy. Their favorite recipes so far include a gyro bowl and Cajun shrimp pasta—yum! But they still enjoy their ~weekly dinner night at Olive Garden (hey Mary!), where they are creatures of habit and always order the same thing.
Many of you already know this story, because you were there! Nick proposed on December 30th at the McDorman family’s New Year’s Eve Eve (yes, you read that right) party. At 9pm (honoring the midnight hour on the East Coast), Julie gathered everyone around the Christmas tree for a NYE toast. Once everyone was gathered, Nick stepped forward. Bec asked, “What are you doing?” because she knows how much Nick doesn’t like to speak in front of a crowd. He addressed the group, thanking them for gathering that night before he got down on one knee and asked, “Will you be the David to my Patrick? Will you marry me?” (Schitt’s Creek reference, IYKYK.) Bec let him linger on his knee for a solid 14 seconds as the people gathered cheered, oohed and ahhed before she finally said, “Yes of course, claro que sí, mi amor.” We were immediately swarmed with congratulations and well wishes, and the rest of the night turned into an impromptu engagement party! While it was a surprise proposal for most people at the party, there were a few key people who already knew it was coming: Nick had individually spoken to Bec’s family (Tom, Julie, Jess & Nate) to ask for their blessing before he proposed. And friend Heather Garcia Cerda gets some credit too, for planting the idea in Nick’s head to propose at the party.
