Nick remembers seeing Keira around the theatre building during his first year in grad school at Wayne State University. She was in "the greatest production ever at the Bonstelle Theatre" James and the Giant Peach and he recalls seeing the costume rendering of Miss Spider and knew that the role had to be played by her since it was completely her style. He remembers their first official meeting during a student play festival rehearsal that they were both involved in. He says he thought she was cute but that he was trying to focus on Grad School. After crossing paths for the rest of the year, he finally decided to ask Keira on a date after watching her sing at her senior showcase. Nick patiently waited until after she'd talked to just about everyone else there, just to tell her what a great job she did and make some other flirtatious small talk. There was an immediate spark, and that spark has only grown since that day.

While in Keira's final year of her BFA studies, she went to see one of the Hillberry Company's shows Inspecting Carol. She remembers thinking that the goofy, ridiculous lead with blonde hair and a big grin was pretty cute, but that there was no way she had any chance of the cute grad student being interested in her. As he recalls, they did in fact meet for the first time at the play festival rehearsal but again, she shrugged it off as something that would never happen. Finally, towards the end of her time at Wayne State, she noticed how long he had waited to say hi to her after her senior showcase. She'd hugged her family, chatted with friends, and other classmate's parents and he stood there patiently just to compliment her. A week or so later, Nick asked Keira to come out to drinks with the grad students after a show (though, she thought he was asking all the undergrads to join) and later that night asked her out for a date. Hundreds of dates, two apartments, two cities, and 5 years later and she counts that "yes" as the best decision she's ever made (well, up until the proposal at least).

After nearly five years together, two apartments, two cats, and a global pandemic, Nick proposed on January 24th of 2021. While they had both discussed marriage in detail and Keira knew that it was coming in the month of January (based on Nick’s constant teasing about the fact that she has a love/hate relationship with surprises), it was still a surprise when he finally asked her to be his wife. After playing her a video he’d taken within the first year of their relationship, where he told her he loved her for the first time, Nick got down on one knee and proposed. There were lots of happy tears and calls to close friends and family to share the good news. It was simple and it was perfect.
