In the Spring of 2016, Nia and Lami were two complete strangers with the same tough decision on their hands: where they were going to attend college. In fact, they both had narrowed down their lists to the same three schools: New York University, University of Miami, and University of Southern California (their first choice). As freshmen at USC, the two never crossed paths. However, on the very first day of their sophomore year, their mutual friend and Nia's roommate Joy hosted a photoshoot for all of USC's black students to come together and meet. Nia almost missed it coming back from class, but she managed to catch the last few photos and within seconds, a beautiful 6'3" man in a Dashiki caught her eye. Without hesitation, she walked right up to Lami to introduce herself. Lami had definitely noticed her, but tried to play it cool by inviting her to be in his music video for his upcoming single "Silhouette". This would mark the first of their many collaborations together as artists, campus leaders, teammates, travel-buddies, coworkers, co-directors, cast-mates, agency-mates, roommates, best friends, and so on. Shortly after the music video shoot, they accidentally ran into each other on the steps of a lonely campus building, and Lami decided to ask Nia out on their very first date: dancing (sneaking) on the roof of Webb tower, attending an underground R&B concert, grabbing burgers at In & Out, and sneaking (see the trend?) into Lami's family music school, where they ended up singing their first song together "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys...and sharing maybe a kiss or two. After their first date, Nia & Lami were truly inseparable, and on September 16, 2017, he officially asked her to be his girlfriend. Their journey since has been nothing short of a beautifully romantic love story. What started as a simple college decision turned into a relationship that has lasted through grief, joy, heartache, and an unbroken, persevering love. Finally, in the Spring of 2022, they pledged their lives to each other as Lami proposed to Nia on the steps of the lonely building where he first asked her out. Nia and Lami look forward to the upcoming date of their sixth anniversary as a couple, where they will bring their closest family and friends together to officially seal their fate as husband and wife.
