Things to Know

Please take the time to look through these. As a national park, Big Bend's primary focus is protecting the wildlife and the landscape. As visitors, there are precautions we need to take in order to respect the park and keep everyone safe.
Question

Parking for the Ceremony?

Answer

Parking is very limited at Sotol Vista Overlook. We encourage carpooling out to the ceremony.

Question

Travel Time Around the Park?

Answer

Travel time between some locations is often an hour, sometimes two. The distance between locations may not seem far, but the speed limit in the park is never above 30 mph. Stay aware of where you are going and how long it will take to get there.

Question

Gassing Up?

Answer

Out in the desert, gas stations are few and far between. Once you are in the park, there is a gas station near the Panther Junction Visitor Center, but Thanksgiving is a busy holiday for the park and this station is known to run out of gas around this time. Take any opportunity to gas up before you enter the park.

Question

Going for a Hike?

Answer

The hikes at Big Bend can be deceptively difficult... if you are going out, you are hiking in a DESERT! Make sure you carry enough water for yourself and the stranger you pass who forgot to bring more than a single bottle. The last time we hiked the far side of the Hot Springs Trail, we saved a family's life doing this. Don't become the one who needs to be saved.
