February 25, 2021 - The Day We Got Engaged This last February, Nick and I got on our first flight ever together. We were headed to Sedona, AZ with a couple of our close friends (Connor Molnar, Hope Steffes, and Ben Illetschko). I was super excited about all of the hiking and adventures that we were going to be going on during the trip, but especially excited about Devil's Bridge. It was a 2.5mile hike to the bridge so the five of us got up early our first morning to go. When we finally got there, there was a line of people waiting to get their own individual time and pictures on the bridge. Connor and Ben had sat down on some rocks near by and said they didn't want to get on the bridge. (Little did I know they were just getting in position to take pictures and videos of the whole thing) Nick was getting nervous as we got closer to our turn on the bridge. He is terrified of heights so I was just hoping he wouldn't get too nervous and bail on going on the bridge. I had no idea his nerves weren't from the heights. It was finally our turn and as we were walking onto the bridge, Nick started tugging on my arm. I thought for sure he was bailing on me and getting off. I turned around to see if he was okay and next thing I know, he's down on one knee! (Gives me chills again writing about it) "Nicole, will you MARRY me?" -Nicholas Joseph Battis By this time the line of people waiting to get on the bridge had caught on to what was happening and started cheering. We were engaged! On our flight home Nick's friends from work told Delta that they had two passengers who had just gotten engaged. We were announced on the flight and they gave us a huge balloon and bottle of champagne to congratulate us. When we got home Nick's family had surprised us by decorating our house and feeding us with D Spot Wing's (our favorite) to keep the celebration going. It was the most perfect morning getting engaged to my favorite person on top of Devils Bridge!
Nick and I met our Freshman year at Simley High School. I was new to Inver Grove that year. I played hockey with Nick's older sister, Natalie, and Nick remembers hearing about the 'new girl' from her. I remember getting a text out of the blue the night before a Friday night football game from a random number. It was from a boy named Nick Battis asking if I would sit by him at the game. Friday night came and I was extremely shy and was too nervous to make the first move to sit by him. We ended up not saying a word to each other at the game, not sitting by each other at all, and then I received a text after the game asking why I hadn't sat by him. The next year he sat behind me in Mr. Pepper's science class. Nick would pull my hair and kick my chair... it was very romantic. Eventually it turned into flirting and I guest it worked, because we have a date at the altar this coming June!
