We have known each other since freshmen year of high school. Though we had plenty of mutual friends we never had any particular fondness for one another.
After a summer camping trip to reunite with a group of our friends from high school, we starting chatting more, had a brief stint of being pen-pals, and shortly came up with a hair-brained scheme to run off to Colorado.
We drove from Florida to Colorado in a beat up Ford pickup over the course of two weeks. We officially starting dating by the time we'd hit Louisiana. Since then we have spent six years in Colorado, having five jobs between us, living in four apartments, driving three cars, raising two bunnies, and loving one another.
For our 5 year anniversary we spent the weekend in Estes Park and planned on visiting Rocky Mountain National Park the afternoon before going home. However the line of cars to enter the park was long, it was hot outside, and we had to make it back to Denver for dinner that evening. So, frustrated, I said we should just skip it and head back early. Nate fought me a little on it, but ultimately we pulled a U-turn and left for Denver. Somewhere along the winding road back we stopped and walked along side the river. At that point Nate got down on his knee and asked me with a ring his mother had picked out years ago for his grandmother. I said yes (I mean, you wouldn't be reading this if I'd said no.) He later told me his plan was to ask me in RMNP, but I had bamboozled him.
