Our story

We've spent the better part of a decade living no more than an hour away from each other (and for 3 years in New York it was a single block!) without ever meeting. Nate is convinced he checked out Hannah speeding along on the treadmill when they belonged to the same gym, but we’ll never know for sure. We finally met on the other side of the country, in San Francisco, between Nate’s first and second year of business school in August, 2019. Nate went camping with a mutual friend who Hannah happened to be dog sitting for. When our friend came to pick up the dog, she suggested we meet. For our first date, we played putt putt in a refurbished SF Victorian. Nate wisely chose to not let Hannah win, kicking off the first of an ever growing set of “friendly” competitions between us. After putt-putt, Nate unknowingly asked a lactose intolerant Hannah to go for ice cream, so Hannah countered and we landed at a mezcal bar in the Mission. Our first date, which ended up being 8 hours, encompasses many of the most important parts of our relationship: a willingness to say yes to new things, competition, stimulating conversation, and the pursuit of serendipity. Two days after our first date, Nate left for Mexico City, but we talked every week while he was gone, and when he returned…well you know the rest. A few camping and hiking adventures, tennis games, puzzles, Netflix binges, international trips, new jobs, new dishes cooked, shabbat dinners, and a cross-country move later we’re excited to celebrate with all of you!

The Proposal

December 29, 2021

Nate proposed to Hannah two hours outside of Oaxaca, Mexico at one of only two petrified waterfalls in the world (see pic below). It was a beautiful day and we were enjoying one of our favorite activities – hiking and exploring somewhere new. Nate waited for Hannah to step out and look at a view before making his move. He proposed with a puzzle box that Hannah solved in characteristically quick fashion before saying yes with equal speed (had he even finished asking yet?). Nate had worked with his dad to design the most beautiful ring symbolizing their journey. The band of the ring has twists like our near-meetings over the years and 6 leaves representing a shared love for nature and our families. As if the universe knew, two nights before the proposal, we met an amazing destination wedding photographer, Monica, at a mole and mezcal tasting. Nate convinced her to do an engagement photo shoot in the city of Oaxaca for the morning after the proposal (check out the gallery for the pictures and say hi to Monica who will be our photographer for the wedding). With the ring safely on Hannah’s finger (instead of the various hiding places Nate had been using throughout our Mexico trip) we headed to Mexico City for New Year’s in a full circle moment to when we parted ways after our first date.
