How we met

Like many 21st-century romances, ours began with a swipe. I met Nathan on a dating app, where he stood out by asking interesting questions. One of the first? “What’s the craziest hairstyle you’ve ever had?” I told him about the time I decided to bleach my dark hair—because I figured everyone should try it once—which turned into multiple bleaching sessions and, eventually, a full head of lilac purple. His answer? A bold blue mohawk. Our first in-person meeting was at a coffee shop. What was supposed to be a casual meet-up turned into a six-hour conversation marathon. And here’s the best part—Nathan doesn’t even like coffee. He sat through all six hours, sipping something he probably hated, just to meet me in a place I was comfortable. Knowing him now, that was a lot of talking for one day. I think he no longer has questions about me because of that day. From that day on, we dated regularly. Each time we met, I got to see more of Nathan’s quirks, kindness, and—although I hate to admit it—his assertiveness. And then, one night, just as I was saying goodbye at his place, he handed me... a copy of his house key. It wasn’t a grand speech or a dramatic gesture. It was simple, sweet, and very Nathan. After eight months, I decided to move in. Cue the learning curve. We quickly discovered that we approached a lot of things very differently—communication styles, love languages, and whether or not the toilet seat really needs to be down. But through it all, we kept showing up for each other—learning how to listen and adjust. These past years with Nathan have given me something even better than perfection: trust.
