On a not so busy day at the Land's 3PM hit and my ER shift was just about over, Dallas Fire paramedic students were showing up for clinical rotations and I was sitting at a computer finishing up my documentation. Leaning over the counter in front of me, one of the students was determined to entertain me with conversation. With a smile as big as my patient load and the confidence of your favorite celebrity; I was willing to converse. I was supposed to be teaching and he learning, so I asked him what he wanted to learn. I don't remember his response exactly but to sum it up he said that there wasn't much I could teach him. Oh! Cocky, are we? I asked him about the source of all of that confidence he was feeling. I also called him a baby, so he asked me to guess his age. I guessed 23 (off by only one week) not because he lacked maturity but because his baby face and grin wouldn't allow me to guess any higher. Needless to say by 7PM I hadn't taught Nathan a thing but I did, however, managed to offend one of his best friends/groomsman by telling him what I thought of his IV starting skills. A few days later, Nate was assigned to triage which is where I so happened to be working. While we talked more about our upbringings and interviewed a few patients now and then my friend/coworker and his coworkers/friends decided to go out for dinner after our shift. Nate offered to picked me up; I happily accepted. He arrived in his little red Mercedes...alone: Me: Are your friends meeting us there? Nate: Grinning, they had to cancel. Me: ALL of them (my friend/coworker included)!? Me: Everybody Nathan (side eye)?! Nate: Yep! (still grinning) He took me for sushi at The Fish, he made me laugh the entire evening, he used his chopsticks with ease and was the perfect gentleman. I went into my roommates room to tell her about what turned out to be a date. "Well, you must like him because you haven't stopped smiling since you came in here"! Me: Look who's grinning now, lol!
