I remember the first day we met, it was a chilly weekend in February. We had been invited to referee a fencing tournament at Cal State University Northridge. I was very familiar with most of the local referees having met them or at least seen them from across a convention center once or twice, but Nathan was a stranger to me. He wore a suit a tad too big for him and he had an energy unlike the rest of the veteran referees who were jaded and tired from having driven long hours to make it out to the valley. The first time we spoke was during a lunch break when a few of the referees crowded in a tiny little closet, trying to quickly ingest the dry sandwiches we were so often provided. I joked with my colleagues just as I always did, until Nathan interjected and caused me some shock. I don't quite remember what he said, but his tone and decisiveness took me a back, "Who the hell was this kid?" Later in the day, we ended up refereeing matches across from each other. While we both waited for our next match to be called, we stood next to the table that separated us and he said, "So, like, are you still in school?" I cackled at the comment, knowing full well that my young school girl days were long behind me. His naivety endeared him to me and I tried to accept the compliment. We chatted for the rest of the tournament and by the end of the day, we had become fast friends. My friends will know that I struggle with making friends and meeting strangers even in the context of a space where I feel comfortable such as a fencing tournament, but with Nathan it was always so easy, comfortable and familiar, as though he'd been there my whole life.
