Built in 1141 in Sacramenia, Spain, the Ancient Spanish Monastery began as a Cistercian religious site dedicated to the Blessed Mother and later renamed for St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Monks lived there for nearly 700 years until 19th-century upheaval led to its seizure and conversion into a granary and stable. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst purchased and shipped it to the U.S. in over 11,000 crates, but financial troubles left it stored in Brooklyn for decades. After his death, entrepreneurs rebuilt it in 1953, a project dubbed by Time magazine as the “biggest jigsaw puzzle.” In 1964, it was donated to the Episcopal Church in Florida, where it now serves as an active parish.
