David’s phone buzzed for the third time in the last two seconds. “Oh, and bring your parents’ van. There are more people coming.” The command showed up on his phone screen. David was conflicted between wanting to feel annoyed that such a small person was bossing him around, and relieved that he wouldn’t have to worry about making plans for the weekend. He decided to relish in the fact that they had been made for him and hurried on to class. Twenty-four hours later David sat in front of Thatcher waiting to pick up the “more people” who were coming. One by one they trailed in. The one who really caught his eye was the last girl to get in. She was wearing a green t-shirt with black leggings. David had never met her before, but he knew who she was. He had first spotted her in his Principles of Accounting class the previous semester. She had a “too cool for school” vibe with her dark brown hair, red highlights, and black leather jacket. She had perplexed him at first. A girl who dressed like she didn’t care what anyone thought about her, yet sat in the first row in class. It seemed like a bit of an oxymoron. Anyway, she ran with the cool kid crew, and David had no interest in getting too close to them. Now, she was sitting in the back seat of the van and David was intrigued. She was introduced to him as Natalie. “Hi I’m David,” he answered. She smiled and answered, “nice to meet you, I think we have a class together.” Before David could hold back he replied with a wry smile, “two actually.” Way to go, he thought to himself, two seconds in and you’re already sounding like a know-it-all. To his surprise, Natalie just laughed in response.
