How We Met

Thanks, Urban Initiatives!

Young has been active as a volunteer for Urban Initiatives, a non-profit organization, for nearly a decade. Given his love of soccer and philanthropy, it was not long before Young became the Associate Board President. On one fateful day in September 2018, Naomi was invited to a Urban Initiatives happy hour by her roommate, who worked at the organization. A few hours later, Naomi would find Young chasing her down the stairs, asking for her phone number. The rest, as they say, is history!

The Proposal

Young and Naomi knew they were each other's forever person early on in their relationship - and living together during a pandemic only reinforced that belief. In early 2021, they began to plan for the next phase of their lives, researching wedding venues in their beloved South Loop neighborhood and planting roots with the purchase of their first home. In May, after settling into their new home, Young suggested a small, intimate housewarming party. Little did Naomi know, Young had a secret plan devised. On the morning of the party, Young convinced Naomi to take a long walk down to their favorite park in the South Loop, Chicago Women's Park and Gardens, where they hoped to one day get married. Set up in the park was a picnic basket and champagne, and before Naomi knew what was happening, Young had proposed! Naomi excitedly said yes, and later that evening, they welcomed friends to their home and surprised everyone with their engagement!
