The story of Naomi and Karim

Everyone, get ready to cringe!!! We have been together for 12 years! Yes, that means since we were 16 and 17 years old! We went to the same secondary school but didn’t speak to each other while we were there. It all started when we went to the same college. Karim used to play football for Wealdstone F.C. and would miss half of his history lessons because of this. This led to Karim copying Naomi in every single class we were in together. She was horrified by Karim’s outright attempt to steal her work every lesson, so she called him out in front of the whole class. ‘Why do you copy me every lesson?’ From then on, it was love!!! We spoke every day by text and ended up being really good friends who couldn’t leave each other alone. Because we were so young and wanted to see each other, the most original place we could think of to go on dates was Nando’s! We went to Nando’s for our first 15 dates (this is no exaggeration). When we told our parents we went to Pizza Express one day, they were so impressed!! Our journey continued as we both went to Manchester University together. This involved some long-distance time, as Karim lived in Jordan for a year, but we also rented our first little flat together. Naomi finally got to see Karim’s ability to sleep 12 hours a night, and Karim got to see Naomi’s obsessive cleaning routine that would wake him up from his 12-hour slumber. But somehow, it worked!!! Naomi left uni and got her first job in London, while Karim finished his final year in Manchester. Another year of long-distance! We both started working in London and lived at our parents houses in Harrow - separate but still spending a lot of time at each other’s places. One day, around the age of 26, after enduring almost 10 long years of living apart or sharing houses with other people, Naomi finally said to Karim, “This living apart thing really isn’t working.” Karim was shocked and surprised that Naomi would ever get to this point. The best he could come up with for us to live together was to leave everyone and move to America. So, we did it!!! We travel light, so we packed up our 12 suitcases and moved to sunny Arizona. And now, here we are, almost 30 years young and finally getting married. We are now spending our time ticking off all the states across the U.S.! We are thankful for our journey, thankful for the love we have for each other, and thankful for the path that is life!

Why did we not do a traditional wedding?

It’s a question we know people are going to ask/ are wondering! As many of you know, we eloped to Vegas! The ceremony was 10 minutes, we were able to get dressed up and have our photos taken, which is one part of a wedding, however, we decided the most important aspect for us is the Islamic ceremony and then a larger party with our family and friends which we decided we want to be casual for many reasons … 1. Both of us really do not like planning big events!!! The thought of this was stressful enough, and that stress was enough to cancel the wedding before we even began planning 2. A wedding for us, is about celebrating our love with the people we love. We decided a more casual event to do this suited us. 3. We live in America! That is really far!! We did not want to have a wedding in America and put pressure on people to attend, and we also did not want to plan a wedding in the UK from America. So landed on the less traditional option of just a casual party! Thank you for joining us regardless!!!
