Mass

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

The Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle holds a deep significance both historically and personally for Nanci and Javi. Named for Saint Matthew—the patron saint of civil servants—the Cathedral reflects the spirit of service that defines the city. Its walls have witnessed remarkable moments in history, including the funeral Mass of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, and visits from Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Francis. For Nanci, the Cathedral also marks the beginning of her own chapter in DC—it was the very first church she attended after moving to the city. During the Mass, you’ll see traditions that reflect our faith and culture. In the arras, Javi will give Nanci 13 coins representing Christ and his 12 disciples, symbolizing shared blessings and responsibility. Our padrinos will place a lazo around us to signify unity, and we’ll offer flowers to the Virgin Mary, asking for her guidance in our marriage.

Cocktail Hour

5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Dress-code: Cocktail. Suits for men and cocktail dresses for women are perfect. We encourage vibrant spring colors.

Reception

6:30 pm - 11:30 pm

We look forward to celebrating our wedding with classic Mexican and Puerto Rican traditions. One of the most beloved is el vals del billete, where guests pin money onto the bride and groom as they dance with them. It’s part dance, part well-wishes for their new life together. So don't forget to bring cash for this! Then there’s la víbora de la mar, which is a fun (and potentially chaotic) conga-like line. Guests form a “snake” by holding hands and dancing under a bridge formed by the bride and groom and througout the dance floor. At one point, the men may (playfully!) try to knock the groom off balance—symbolizing the couple's unity and their commitment to face life's challenges together. And just when you think the night has peaked… don’t get too comfortable—there may be a late-night surprise waiting to take things to the next level.
