Our Story

Crossroads of the Best Kind

Jacob and Avery's story began in 2017, at Byron Nelson High School, when they sat across from one another during AP Human Geography class. He thought she dressed like a goth librarian (cardigans and Doc Martens), and she thought he was a little annoying for asking questions that drew attention to their table (though she thought he was cute). During junior year, Jacob went to a different school, and they didn't think their paths would ever cross again. Fast forward a few years, and Avery was working at Roanoke Pharmacy when she started to hear coworkers mention a new hire named Jacob Griffin. She knew the name sounded familiar, so she scoped out her yearbooks, but couldn't find any confirmation that it was who she thought it was. Before he started, his mother, a longtime customer at the pharmacy, kept telling Jacob about a cute girl who worked there and was his age. On his third day of work, Avery walked in and recognized him immediately, but didn't know if he would recognize her, so she went about her business. He, in fact, did remember her (because, c'mon, it's hard to forget a last name like Nagengast). They enjoyed working together for about a month, trading barbs and sarcastic comments every few minutes (the only way either of them knew how to flirt). It wasn't long before coworkers began to notice the dynamic. After a month of working together, pharmacy coworkers cornered Avery and Jacob separately and asked them if they were going to ask each other out. Jacob asked Avery out the next week. Their first date was January 25th, 2022, at the local Chili's. They walked in, expecting a two-hour dinner, getting to know one another better, and walked out five hours later, having shared many odd details and stories from their respective lives. They decided to be a couple a week or so after that. The next three years went by in a whirlwind of joy and laughter. The two of them enjoyed old cheesy thrillers and horror movies, World Market Snack dates, hiking trips in Oklahoma, Magic: The Gathering games that Avery could hardly stay awake for, reading dates, coffee dates, and got to know each other in the best way possible. Then, on their third anniversary, in the beautiful Wichita Mountain Range in Cache, Oklahoma, a place very special to both of them, Jacob asked Avery to marry him. After an excruciatingly long moment of shock, Avery said, "Yes." So much has been stuck in the time that the two of them have been together, but this is only the beginning.
