Nadia and Jacob’s story began when Jacob sent her a like and a message on Hinge, the dating app they were both using. He liked her smile and was excited by their shared interest in watching their favorite sports teams. Nadia was excited to talk about her soccer fandom and was happy that he had a strong relationship with his faith and his family like she did. When he asked her out for coffee after only a couple days of messaging each other, Nadia agreed to meet him in-person at The Oak House in Durham. If either Nadia or Jacob were nervous before the date, they both enjoyed how easy it was to talk over tea and hot cocoa. Jacob was excited to find that they had many more common interests, like an appreciation for film and a love for traveling to amusement parks (although Nadia only goes to Disney World and Jacob prefers extreme thrill rides.) They also connected over a shared history of moving towns, cities, and states, and sharing about the differences in the places they’d lived. Jacob still remembers how the night ended, when he walked her to her car. As they walked across the street, they were talking while making a direct line towards a massive red pickup truck with a lift kit. He had only known her for an hour and a half, but he couldn’t imagine she was about to climb into that truck. He was so shocked he asked her in disbelief if it was her truck. Without missing a beat she said, “Yeah!” and pretended she was going to get in. They both laughed about Jacob’s shock and his vision of the kind of car she would drive was proven right when they got to her sedan with Disney bumper stickers. Nadia and Jacob began to see each other regularly for dates, but after a couple weeks, Jacob came down with a lingering illness that kept them from seeing each other for two weeks. They were both silently worried that this would lead to them stopping dating, but once Jacob was feeling better, he took her to his favorite frozen custard place and asked her if she would be his girlfriend. She said yes of course, and they sat for hours talking about their beliefs and what they wanted in their future. After a couple months of going on dates, Jacob and Nadia found that they both loved going to trivia nights together. It was after one of these nights that they first said, “I love you.” But you’ll have to guess who said it first. A few months later Jacob and Nadia took a wonderful trip to Charleston, South Carolina together and Jacob realized he couldn’t wait much longer to propose. It was on October 26th that Jacob decided he would pop the question, but his plan was turned upside down before he could get down on one knee. He was planning to take her on a hike at Occoneechee Mountain in Hillsborough, where there is a scenic overlook that Jacob believes is the best in the Triangle. When they got to the entrance to the parking lot, they found that the trail was closed! Jacob had to stay cool and pivot to taking her into town. They parked in downtown Hillsborough and walked through the city to the trail that runs along the Eno River. After eating lunch on a bench where friendly strangers kept saying hi, they walked along the trail and Jacob looked for a secluded and scenic spot where he could ask her the question. He found a large, flat boulder on the edge of the river and led her down under the guise of looking for fish. He distracted her by asking her if she could see anything, and pulled the ring out of his bag while her back was to him. Jacob was too anxious to say anything beyond, “Will you marry me?” and Nadia was quick to say: “NO…WAY!” His heart skipped a beat before she added an enthusiastic “Yes.” Nadia had been thinking about a wedding that very week and they had been talking about marriage for a while, but he managed to catch her completely by surprise. Now that they are engaged, they look forward to building a life together, growing together in their faith, expanding their family, and of course, planning a wedding!
