The gaye holud is a beautifying and blessing ceremony that takes place prior to the wedding ceremony with food, dance and music. It is a joint event that brings together the bride and grooms' families. Guests wear bright, festive colors like orange, yellow, green, and pink. The bride is typically seated on a dais and turmeric paste is applied by the guests to her face and body. Turmeric is known to cleanse, soften and brighten the skin, giving the bride's skin the distinctive yellow hue that gives its name to this ceremony. Sweets are then fed to the bride by all the guests and attendants, piece by piece. Henna is used to decorate the bride's hands and feet with elaborate abstract designs.
