Is Salem close by?

Alas, no, it's in the opposite direction. However! If you truly want to go to Salem during your trip, there is a train that goes directly there from Boston. That's going to be the best way to get there, as Salem is PACKED in October. Make reservations to attractions ahead of time, and be aware that if you drive, parking is at minimum 50 dollars and VERY hard to get.
