How We Met

When the backup becomes the GOAT

Samantha - In early March of 2021, after graduating from my nutrition program, I was preparing for a long awaited girls trip to the mountains with some of my closest girlfriends. Up to this point, I had never dated seriously, had been super busy with classes and work and was VERY resistant to online dating (with the exception of the one time my sweet friend, Jenna, gave me a few drinks and then convinced me to create a Hinge profile - it lasted 5 days. I deleted it never to consider it again for several months). In the weeks leading up to the trip, I had begun to consider the possibility of online dating again and the pros and cons of the idea - praying, listening to podcasts, talking to my mom, etc. If you know me, you know I mull things over a 1000 times before I take action on them. SO, with all the details of our trip at the front of my mind and online dating at the back, I decided that I would get on Hinge once again, but this time, I'd give my girlfriends who know me best the responsibility of building my profile. This way, I didn't have to stress about it and if they posted awful pictures of me, maybe it would filter out people I didn't want to talk to anyway. Over the next 1-2 weeks, I started and ended conversations with a few guys and had set up a date with one who I will call guy 'A'. This person had proven to be semi-disinterested, but we managed to schedule and then reschedule a date for Wednesday, March 24th, 2021. While I was in broken conversation with this guy and trying way too hard to get him to set up a date, Cameron Munson showed up on scene and responded to a prompt on my profile. Our conversation quickly expanded and I became much more excited to meet him than anyone else. Due to a crazy schedule that week (including a date with the other guy), the only time Cameron and I could coordinate to meet was Thursday that same week, but it would have to be for drinks after his bible study (by which point, I would have been ready to sleep but was willing to make the sacrifice). So we made plans. Then comes March 24th. I'm supposed to go on a date with guy 'A', but he had not named a place or time and based on his history, I KNEW he would flake, so I decided that if I heard nothing from him by lunch that day, I would ask Cameron if he wanted to move our plans up a night so we would have more time and I wouldn't be dozing through our conversation. I texted Cameron that morning and said, 'Hey, my plans have potential to fall through tonight. Would you want to go out tonight instead?' He agreed. By lunch, I hadn't heard a peep from guy 'A,' so went through with plan 'B' or as Cam would say, I brought in the 'backup.' That night, we talked for hours and then went out on a 2nd date a week and a half later. In May, we made it 'official' and have been learning each other and growing as people and in relationship ever since. We got engaged February 5th. My family had planned a trip in the mountains to get all of us together for a week for some fun. My siblings and I scheduled a photographer to take family photos as a gift to our mom. I had joked with Cam that unintentionally, I had 'teed up' the perfect proposal opportunity for him. All I had asked for in a proposal was that my family would be there. Of course, I made sure he knew I was joking and encouraged him to do it when he was ready, whether it was on our family trip or not. Since I have come to know Cameron as someone who doesn't like to take the easy way, but wants to blaze his own trail, I convinced myself he was saving it for another time. But, much to my surprise, he popped the question! From the start, Cam has been the most easy going, patient and deeply loving man even though he may have weird jokes and sometimes, likes to look for buttons and push them. We are so very excited to move into the next chapter of our lives together! Cameron: I was sitting on the bench when she called me into the big leagues. Now I'm the GOAT.
