Alanna and Madison met as classmates in Japanese 104 at Whitman College in 2011. They later became roommates in Whitman's Tekisuijuku house, and then spent their junior year on the same study abroad program in Kyoto, Japan.

Yumiko's family hosted Madison during her first visit to Japan in 2008. They've stayed in touch through the 11 years since then, and always make a point of visiting when they find themselves in the same country.
