Sam and I met our first night in Auburn. I had just parked my car in a lot way across campus from my dorm and had just missed the security shuttle (i.e. drunk bus) to take me back. Luckily, another came shortly after, and I was greeted by 3 young men, 2 of which would become dear friends, and 1 would become my life partner. Sam would ask me out on a plethora of dates all of which I turned down as I was CLEARLY an independent woman with no dating agenda... until he worked in New Mexico for the summer and wrote me almost every day. Our love blossomed on paper and grew face to face for the next six years. We completed college together. We navigated long distance, first jobs, missed opportunities, and the heavy loss of loved ones. We moved across the country together and pursued our passions. We've grown separately, but never apart; and for that, I am eternally grateful.
Maddy and I have quite the unique love story. Through the years it has grown deeper, stronger and more authentically ours. From a brief meeting on a shuttle the first day of Freshman year we had a slow first few months of knowing each other. Finally towards the end of that year, I had convinced Maddy I was a decent person, and our relationship was on the verge of becoming a thing. Only downside is I was headed out to spend the summer at Philmont...Well they say distance makes the heart grow fonder & that was specifically true for us through the written word that summer. Maddy and I continued dating through college and were fortunate enough our next “stop” in life took her just a few hours south of me in Nashville, to Birmingham to finish up her Masters degree. Weekends were never long enough, and thankfully after a quick 18 months, Maddy was able to move up my way to her hometown. After a few great years in Nashville we both took opportunities in California. Throughout it all we have stood by each other’s side as best friends and partners on the adventure called life.
I can confidently say I brought my parents together and have kept them together. You guys should see 'em! They can't sleep until I'm burrowed under the covers between them. And they collect my poop! That's love if I've ever seen it. Mom KNEW she couldn't live without me the second we met, but dad took a little more convincing. All it took was some snuggling, easing up on the amount of phone chargers I chewed up (toughest sacrifice of my life), and my unwavering loyalty.
