Growing up our parents often told us not to meet strangers off the internet. They had fun sayings like, "stranger danger" and "never go to a second location", both of which we completely ignored. After a swipe on Hinge, a flurry of messages, an unexpected call, and one final text, Ian and Erin decided to meet at an ice cream shop in the Franklin Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, charmingly situated opposite the Scientology Celebrity Center. "You should go, it's free ice cream," Erin's roommate, Maddie, advised her while they were grocery shopping an hour before the scheduled date. "I'll probably be back soon," Ian mentioned to his roommate, Aaron, as he walked out the door. Little did they know, what they thought would be a "quick date that probably won't go anywhere" would turn out to be their last first date. The evening kicked off at the ice cream shop, followed by endless laughter and stories over a pot of tea at the café next door. Closing down the café, they continued their conversation at a neighborhood diner, indulging in a 1:00 a.m. omelette, as one does on a Monday night. As the hours ticked by, they found themselves pleasantly surprised. Surprised not only by how well the date was going but also by the lack of concern from their roommates, who hadn't reached out to check on their well-being at such a late hour. Needless to say, the date exceeded expectations. So well, in fact, that a few short years later, Ian had the crazy idea to ask Erin to marry him atop a mountain shrouded in clouds in Quindío, Colombia.
