How We Met

A sweet story about social media and love

An accidental “Like” on a Facebook comment, led to a seven-year relationship and now…a marriage! In 2013, both Tye and Morgan posted “Happy Birthday!” comments on a mutual friend’s Facebook page. Morgan accidentally “liked” Tye’s comment, then quickly deleted it, thinking nothing more about it. Little did she know that Tye had already received a notification about her “like”! He became curious about how Morgan knew this guy he’d attended elementary school with in Germany. After a light photo stalk, Tye decided to take a shot by messaging Morgan, “Thanks for liking my comment.” Morgan was mortified, but after doing a heavier stalk of her own on his page, she decided to reply. Facebook messages led to a number exchange and then countless late-night phone calls. Tye who was living in North Carolina at the time, while Morgan was in Philadelphia. They decided to meet up while she was home during her winter break. The day after Valentine’s day in 2014, they officially became a couple, persevering through two years of long-distance dating before they moved to Connecticut together. They lived in Norwalk for four years before relocating to Virginia in 2020 to be closer to family.

The Proposal

Morgan almost ruined her proposal

In 2019, Tye surprised Morgan with a ring-scouting trip to her favorite jewelry store (Anna Sheffield in NYC), but no proposal happened. Unbeknownst to her, Tye had arranged a second trip back to the store by himself, in order to design her ring. When it finally arrived (after many COVID-related delays), six-foot-four Tye hid the ring box on a shelf that Morgan (five-foot-one) couldn’t reach, not even with her handy stepstool. Now, Tye just needed to find a special place to propose. His first thought was to do it during the 2020 Black Lives Matter rally in Washington, D.C., as he and Morgan were both passionate activists. Then he decided that a beautiful scenic drive of the Shendaoah Skyline would provide the perfect opportunity to get down on one knee. Morgan had no idea, and this was also at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, when Tye wanted to approach people to take a photo of them, Morgan said, “No, I don’t want people who aren’t even wearing masks touching my phone.” She had no idea that he was trying to find someone who could capture the moment of him proposing. Despite these roadblocks, Tye was determined to pop the question. On their way home, he stopped once more at their favorite overlook from the drive. While Morgan was taking in the view, he got down on one knee behind her. Thankfully, a nearby couple noticed what was happening and kindly recorded the special moment on video and with photos. Morgan was in complete shock and forgot to say “yes” at first. (Though of course, as you all know, she absolutely did say yes!”)

The Day

June 19 is more than our wedding day

Juneteenth is a historic day and incredibly important to us and our culture. It’s a day of celebration, jubilee, freedom, and opportunity as the last remaining enslaved African-Americans were set free on June 19, 1865. The word, Juneteenth, was coined after merging June and Nineteenth together. And just as our ancestors did before us, we will jump the broom to seal our vows and transition into the next chapter of our lives together. So, in honor of Juneteenth, it was important that we choose our vendors carefully; our wedding vendors are either Black-owned small businesses or companies owned by people of color and/or women. We also are asking for donations to the NAACP in our registry. Please view “Our Wedding Vendors” tab to gain information on all the talented individual’s that are working hard to make sure we have a special day. Don’t forget to join us virtually with the link provided in the invitation, which can also be found on the “We’re going Virtual” tab. Our registry is though Zola, but check out the FAQs for additional gift-giving ideas or if you need any assistance accessing our wedding. We're so excited to celebrate this incredibly special day with all of you, virtually!
