Things To Do

Morgan and Peter visited Madeira back in 2023 (When Morgan thought Peter was actually going to propose). They fell in love with the hiking and activities on the island. We want you to keep in mind that Peter and Morgan are the anti-tourists, opting for small towns over the more well known areas. You aren't going to find a Michelin Restaurant on this list. Like all Hiking we recommend that you do the research on the current conditions of the trails, if you need permits, and if the weather shows it as safe to hike. As always please respect the planet and leave no trace.
PR8 São Lourenço Viewpoint - Cais do Sardinha - Pico do Furado

PR8 São Lourenço Viewpoint - Cais do Sardinha - Pico do Furado

A great option to see some rock formations on the east end of the island. This hike is for all people. Morgan REALLY likes these rock formations.

Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest

Madeira 9270, Portugal

If you like crazy looking trees and vibey photographs this is the place for you. This is tough to get to its located at the top of the island and you go through tight windy roads uphill to get there. If you hike to the top of the hill there is a beautiful view of the coastline. Peter says you should go its definitely worth it (loved photographing the trees) Morgan doesn't recommend- Too much cow shit for her.

Pico do Areeiro - Pico Ruivo

Pico do Areeiro - Pico Ruivo

This is the most iconic hike on Madeira. It's the two tallest peaks on the island. Sometimes you're hiking above the clouds. Caution- this hike is hard with a lot of stairs. You will also need to find transportation as you can no longer hike out and back.

Quinta do Barbusano winery

Quinta do Barbusano winery

São Vicente, Madeira 9240, Portugal

Peter and Morgan stayed in Sao Vicente on their first visit to Madeira and were walking distance to this winery. We highly recommend the tour and wine tasting.

Sexial

Sexial

Sexial, Madeira, Portugal

There are a multitude of things to do in this little town. They have great little restaurants by the water as well as natural swimming pools. Morgan recommends the Snack Bar Avista Navios for the best view to enjoy a cup of coffee. We recommend these natural pools over the ones in Porto Moniz, they are free and you can swim with the sea life. Sexial is home to a black sand beach where you can see the mountainous coast. We also highly recommend the cafes and little restaurants along the water. You need to try Madeiras signature drink Poncha, Fresh squeezed Orange juice and rum.

Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz, Madeira, Portugal

This is a cute little town that is more set up for tourists than others on the northwest part of the island. You will find some of the best views at these coffee shops. We recommend taking a walk down to the coast line to see Ribeira da Janela. These rocks are what made Morgan want to come to Madeira in the first place. Porto Moniz also has natural pools, although they are touristy and you have to pay to get in. We preferred the ones in Sexial more. If you take a drive up the mountain there are activities such a swing that sends you out over the cliff.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde PR9

Levada do Caldeirão Verde PR9

Santana, Madeira 9230, Portugal

Up the mountain there are numerous Levada hikes through tunnels to view water falls and have scenic views. Madeira has a unique levada system that carries water from the top of the island to the bottom. It's basically a system of canals that bring water to people around the island. These hikes were easy and a lot of fun. We recommend going early as many tours go through here. In many spots there is only room for one person to pass
