Things To Do

From our Mount Airy native groom, here are Justin’s recommendations of things to do in the area during your stay….. Welcome to the Happiest Place on Earth: Mayberry, NC! This magical Foothills town is home to more than Andy, Opie, and the Gang. It has a lot to offer visitors and we hope you’ll enjoy your time here! (Note: Mount Airy is home to a ton of chains you’re familiar with – you won’t see most of those here but they are there!)

Morning Stops

Keepsmiling A’Latte – Located Downtown on Pine Street, this place is my go-to coffee shop when I’m back in town. Located to the left of the register is a place where you can buy a cup for someone who may be down on their luck. I love that concept. Rusty Rooster Southern Breakfast – Aptly named after the world’s greatest dog – This place always has a decent cup of coffee and a delicious breakfast – located off Hwy 52 not far from Hampton Inn- Mt. Airy Barney’s Café – Named after America’s favorite deputy, this is as old school breakfast as it gets. (Beware: it MAY still be cash only) Located downtown on Main St. Starbucks. - Whatever. It’s on 601 across from Hampton Inn in Mount Airy. Morgan made me list this.

Lunch

Snappy Lunch – The only restaurant most people visiting our town has heard of! Grab ya a pork chop sandwich (all the way) a bag of chips, and enjoy! (Note – the hours are 6-1:15 on Saturdays) Dairy Center – A personal favorite from growing up, just diner style food near Mount Airy High School, a little bit off the beaten path of downtown. Fully recommend the ground steak sandwich. Tilted Ladder – If you’re heading to Pilot Mountain, it’s the best! Pilot Mountain is best explored BEFORE this meal. SqueezeBox – Also Downtown Pilot Mountain – Cash Only. Great Burgers. Great prices. Cash only. And before you argue with your spouse/GPS, yes that’s it. It is called the “squeeze box’ Pete and Judy Terrell’s House – It’s not a real restaurant but if you need a turkey and cheese sandwich and a handful of chips for lunch – it’s unbeatable. Reservations REQUIRED. Old North State Winery - Mayberry Fine Dining! It’s downtown and delicious.

Dinner

Kazoku Sushi and Bar - Downtown on Franklin Street - I also didn’t believe in Mount Airy having good sushi and I was wrong. Mi Casa on Main - Downtown on Main Street - Tacos/Margaritas/Etc. Highly recommend the Blackberry Margarita. Chase and Charli - The place we’ve visited most with my folks. Also the first meal we had post engagement! Caution: the ‘Skirt Burger’ has an entire pack of cheese melted on it. Thirsty Souls Community Brewing - Best pizza in town. We’ll be here Friday night. (and across the street at White Elephant) The Loaded Goat - I’ve never been, but it’s named after an Andy Griffith Show episode so it can’t be bad. Bonus: The best breakfast is town is at Olympia. If you read this far, then you deserve to know that. It’s on Riverside Drive.

Things To Do

Mayberry Squad Tour: https://www.tourmayberry.com/ - $50/car ride. Straight out of the show. Wally’s Service Station/Floyds Barber Shop: They still exist! Staples from the show. Go hike Pilot Mountain - You can drive to the top if you want for better views and less sweat. Last time I did this, I came home with a Fiance though so be careful! World’s Largest Open Faced Granite Quarry. - I don’t know what to say about this other than it exists.
