The Town of Vegreville

A note from Emile:

The town of Vegreville was originally founded in the late 1800s by Joseph Benoit Tetreau and Joseph Poulin, both of which are likely distant relatives, though we can't confirm...The town was later named after a missionary named father Valetin Vegreville. The first settlers to the original townsite were French Canadian families who immigrated from Kansas, which is known as Old Vegreville. When the Canadian National Railway built a rail line through the region in 1905, the town moved to its new and current townsite; it became officially incorporated in 1906. The prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) are all very popular destinations for Ukrainian immigrants to Canada, as this area highly resembles Ukraine's vast, wide-open farmland and big blue skies (just like the Ukrainian flag's blue half represents the sky and the yellow half, wheat fields). Today the town is 35% Ukrainian according to the 2016 Census. The town has been a proud host of the Pysanka Festival for the last 50 years, annually celebrating its Ukrainian culture. Part of Vegreville’s proud history is that it is also home to the worlds largest easter egg (Pysanka) which was unveiled in 1978. Vegreville in more recent times has also become a safe haven for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, providing homes and stability to those escaping persecution from Russia. Growing up in a town like this provides you with strong cultural ties, sense of community, engrains you with the hard working spirit of its ancestors, and connects you to the proud future all immigrants' co-creating upon arrival.
