Question

What should I expect from a Quaker ceremony?

Answer

A Quaker wedding is built on the belief that marriage is a sacred commitment made to one another in the presence of God and witnessed by the community. There's no officiant in the traditional sense—instead, we will marry each other through our spoken vows, with everyone present serving as witnesses to our marriage. We've blended some aspects of more contemporary weddings in with the Quaker tradition, so there are some parts that you may not see elsewhere in other Quaker ceremonies. After entrances, the ceremony proceeds with a period of silence. Following the period of silence, we will rise and speak our vows to one another. After the vows, we'll sign our marriage certificate, followed by immediate family and the wedding party. Following the certificate signing, there will be another period of silent worship. During this time, anyone who feels called to speak may rise and share a brief message, prayer, blessing, or reflection about marriage, love, or the couple. Messages should be brief and spoken from the heart. We'll plan to have a microphone that may be passed around by the Ushers.
