Our COVID-19 Love Story

We met in one of the most unexpected ways—during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I, Monica, was working in the blood bank, and Robert was delivering COVID-19 swabs from his unit to my lab. Despite both of us wearing masks and not really knowing what the other looked like, there was still a spark. As time passed, the COVID-19 Lab moved to another part of the hospital, and I thought that was the last I'd ever see of him. A few months later, I started a new role in the Point of Care department, which was also handling COVID-19 testing at the time. To my surprise, I ran into him again—I had another chance. However, it still took a few months for either of us to gather the courage to say anything. The ice finally broke when I needed to retrieve a Glucose Meter dock from his department. I asked him for directions, and not only did he guide me, but he also walked me to the location... and back... and even stayed to help disinfect the dock. Throughout that night, he kept coming back with more swabs, and before he left, we finally exchanged phone numbers—our 'excuse' was for him to share photos from Megacon. It was a long 16-hour shift for me, but meeting him made every minute worth it. We started texting every day, and soon after, we began having lunch breaks at work together. Our first lunch was special because it was the first time we saw each other’s faces without masks. Ever since then, we have been inseparable. Out of all the challenges COVID-19 brought, meeting each other was the only good thing that came out of it!
