How We Met

June 2012

Monica: It all began one summer day on my very first day of work. Edwin and I were both newly hired as Customer Service Representatives and started training on the same day. I was already seated in the classroom, waiting for training to begin, when there was a knock at the door. In walked this buff guy wearing very fitted business attire and sporting a two-inch-high mohawk. The trainer welcomed him in and asked him to introduce himself since he was late. Edwin walked to the center of the room and, in a surprisingly soft voice, said, “My name is Edwin Saenz, and I like to work out.” Then he flexed both arms in the air and kissed each of his biceps. My first thought was, Who is this Johnny Bravo look-alike? He seemed funny… but also kind of annoying. I honestly thought he was conceited, which was a big turnoff for me. As the weeks went by, though, I realized how wrong I was. Beneath the muscles and confidence was someone incredibly sweet — and actually very shy. One day, I was invited to a poker night a coworker was hosting. Before we left work, Edwin came up to me and asked for my phone number “just in case he got lost.” And just like that, the texts started — good mornings, see-you-at-lunch messages, and plenty of I hate this job texts. I was going through a lot of changes in my life at the time, and Edwin became more than just a coworker. He became a close friend and a shoulder to cry on — and eventually, so much more. Edwin: I met Monica on our first day of work during training, and from the moment I saw her, she caught my attention. I may have made a slightly dramatic entrance — I was late, walked into a quiet classroom, and was immediately asked to introduce myself. Nervous and trying to lighten the mood, I said I liked to work out… then flexed and kissed my biceps. Looking back, probably not my smoothest moment — but it definitely made an impression. As we went through training together, I got to know Monica and quickly realized how genuine, kind, and easy she was to talk to. I looked forward to seeing her every day. When a coworker invited us to a poker night, I saw my chance and asked Monica for her number — “in case I got lost,” of course. From there, texting turned into constant conversations, lunches together, and getting through workdays side by side. Over time, Monica became my best friend. Being there for each other through life’s changes brought us closer than I ever expected. What started as coworkers turned into something real, meaningful, and lasting. And that first day of work? It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.
