Tucked along Route 73 between Lake Placid and Keene, this unassuming spot surprises with an unexpected and utterly breathtaking view of the Adirondack High Peaks. On a clear day, the majestic Mount Marcy, Mount Colden, and Algonquin Peak are front and center. As you approach, the vista seemingly appears out of nowhere after passing through wooded areas, opening up to an expansive meadow offering panoramic views of the towering peaks. This is likely the most iconic and scenic view within the Adirondack Park. However, this spot isn't just a scenic vista; it's a part of our journey. Every year driving down this road to the Loj, we are excited for the mountainous adventures to come. One unforgettable night we pulled over under the star-studded sky, lying on the hood of our car, we were mesmerized by the shooting stars and milky way. It was a special moment amidst the grandeur of the universe, etched in our memories forever.
Often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks,” the chasm presents an unparalleled adventure in the region. Carved out of 500 million-year-old Potsdam Sandstone, this geological marvel formed in the post-Pleistocene Epoch ice age, creating a one-mile journey for the AuSable River through caves, tunnels, and breathtaking natural formations. The chasm's trails unveil wonders like Rainbow Falls, Elephant's Head, Column Rock, Hyde's Cave, and the awe-inspiring Mystic Gorge. Our own visit in November allowed us a rare, unmatched experience, being the sole explorers amidst the frozen waterfalls and serene landscape. Despite the snowy conditions and Alyssa’s recovery from knee surgery, the yellow trail down to the river was manageable. Traversing the yellow and green trails to the chasm's end, looping back via the orange trail through the Big Dry Chasm, offered an adventure amidst craggy sections and boulders. These areas, once the river's path, now stand as natural wonders.
Previously known as the cherished “Bowlwinkles”, the perfect moniker for a bowling alley, this spot recently underwent a transformation that left us nostalgic for its iconic former name. Now operating as Big Z’s, the venue features eight modern bowling lanes with on-demand ordering systems for food and drinks. Beyond bowling, they've added a multi-sport simulator where you can practice hockey, soccer, or even play a round of golf at top courses. They also offer variety of other games such as shuffleboard, pool, darts, and an arcade selection. With a casual ambiance and two full bars, it remains a go-to destination for casual entertainment and fun. Despite the name change, Big Z's Hangout is still a great time.
