Question

What is a Traditional Lao Wedding Ceremony?

Answer

A Lao wedding is a beautiful blend of traditional customs, spiritual and symbolic rituals that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Laos. The ceremony is not legally binding and is led by a Buddhist Monk which includes a short Grooms Parade "Hae Keuy", Negotiation to Meet the Bride and the Blessing Ceremony "Sou Khuan".

Question

What is the Grooms Parade and should I participate?

Answer

In Lao wedding traditions, the groom parades to the bride's house to announce the wedding and ask for blessings from everyone he meets. The groom is accompanied by his family, relatives, and friends. Bringing along three essential items: sword, money bag and candle. Symbolizing protection, fortune and family spirit. The parade will be quick and begin outside leading into the venue. Not all guests are required to parade. Those who do not join the parade are encouraged to sit with the bride at the ceremony and enjoy the view of the Grooms entrance.

Question

What is the Grooms Entrance and Negotiation?

Answer

As a sign of respect, before entering to see the bride, the groom must have his feet cleansed. The groom will offer a series of gifts to the brides guardians in order to get to his bride, a symbol that he can overcome whatever obstacles that await them in the future. The groom and brides family will exchange a toast symbolizing acceptance and peace leading into the blessing ceremony to meet the bride.

Question

What is the Blessing Ceremony “Sou Khuan”?

Answer

Sou Khuan, an important ceremony that Laotians identify critical life events with such as marriage and birth. The Lao culture truly believes good luck and prosperity is accompanied by a balance soul (khuan). The ceremony is a reflection of unifying guests with the couples soul promoting a healthy, strong, successful and long future ahead. The Sou Khuan’s focal point is the Pha Khuan, floral centerpieces decorated to suit the marriage rituals with white strings. The rituals are led by a Buddhist Monk reciting in the language of Buddha including candle lighting, egg feeding, toast and Phou Khain. Symbolizing the families spirits, purity, new life, acceptance and blessings. Phou Khain, the blessings from the Buddhist Monk and guests are unified by white strings. The white strings are tied as bracelets to preserve good luck for the couple and guests. Guests are encouraged to sit on the floor with the bride and groom.
