Justin and Melissa woke up to a beautifully sunny Colorado summer morning at a campsite near Longs Peak. There was a conversation about summiting the iconic 14er the day prior, though neither Melissa nor Justin cared to set an alarm for the 3 AM summit-start. Instead, they took their time waking up, making coffee and mozying to the trailhead. Knowing that summiting before the noon storms was an intangible and dangerous goal at this point, they set a new destination: Chasm Lake. The trail wound and weaved as the thick conifer forest turned into a subalpine shrubland and then to an alpine scramble. Eventually, the trail disappeared and they continued to scramble up until Chasm Lake was in view. What Melissa thought was just another beautiful alpine lunch spot with a view overlooking a classic glacial lake, Justin saw as the perfect setting to ask for her hand in marriage.
