I was just a girl visiting her pastors in West Sacramento throughout 2023. All along, there was a young man faithfully serving as the worship leader. We shared a few polite greetings here and there, but nothing sparked—at least not yet. Time passed, and soon we were celebrating the church’s one-year anniversary. That day became the beginning of something new. Mr. Jessie made a bold move—stepping into the food line where I was serving. But he wasn’t just there for a plate; he was there with a heart full of questions—21 and counting—that he could no longer keep inside. One by one, he asked them, and with each answer, the space between us grew smaller. What started as simple curiosity unfolded into connection. And in that moment, a quiet story that had been waiting all year finally began.
