Where it all Began

From Stone Mountain to Forever

It started with a hike up Stone Mountain- blistering sun, laughter echoing off the granite, and that unspoken tension that only comes when two people are trying not to notice each other. Kayla and Zach had known each other for a while, but something about that day shifted the air. On the bus ride back, the group started talking about summer plans. Kayla, leaning against the window, had mentioned that she wanted to throw a birthday party. One last gathering before they all went their separate ways to college. Zach listened quietly, pretending not to care, but his mind lingered on the way she said it - like she already knew the summer was going to mean something. Then came the story that changed everything. Kayla told the group about her recent trip to her local QuikTrip, where she had seen a man propose to his girlfriend in front of the slushie machines. How the man's girlfriend was so shocked, she threw her slushie at him. Everyone laughed, but Zach's mind lingered. Later that day, their friend Luke - the unintentional match maker - made a group chat with the three of them. Not long after, Zach texted her privately: "Do you want to have your birthday party at a QuikTrip?" Casual. Safe. Totally not a date... At least thats what Kayla thought. A couple days later, the pair hung out for the first time. A date? We're not sure if either of them knew. It was a painfully akward gathering in that endearing teenage way. They walked around the mall like two undercover agents pretending not to be on a mission. They shared pretzels and watched one man beat twenty people in chess, all while sitting there, both silently wondering: is this friendship, or something more? Every glance felt like a question neither dared to ask. Later that night, Zach texted her again. "I want to ask you something, but it'll have to be in person on Monday." Kayla immediately felt butterflies enter her stomach. She knew what was coming- or at least, she hoped she did. Monday arrived. They sat through literature class together, pretending to take notes, hearts racing. Zach didn't say a word. Every tick of the clock stretched the air between them tighter. When the bell finally rang, they walked to the cafeteria together, when he turned to her and asked, "Will you go out with me?' Kayla smiled and said yes. Two days later, Zach asked her to prom - in true Zach fashion, with a mix of confidence and terrified sincerity. In five chaotic, unforgettable days, everything changed. From Stone Mountain to the mall. From awkward silence to first love- it was all a blur of laughter, nerves, and new beginnings.
