As most of you know, Matthew and Mingyi met on Hinge. Unfortunately, Mingyi forgot to update her location settings and so, despite being in Rhode Island, Mingyi matched with Matthew, who was in New York. And thus began two months of online flirting and video dates. On January 15th, 2021, they decided that it was time to meet each other in person in New Haven, halfway between where they each lived. And you all know the rest!
After waking up bleary-eyed and jetlagged at 5am in their hotel on Waikiki beach, Matthew asked Mingyi if she'd like to go for a walk to see the sunrise. Fortunately, Mingyi decided to wear a cute outfit. After walking along the beach for a while, Matthew sees an outcropping of rocks and asks Mingyi if she'd like to go explore them. Always (or mostly always) up for an adventure, Mingyi said yes. Before they started out, Matthew found some Japanese tourists to take their picture. And so began their trek to the end of the outcropping. When they had nearly reached the end, Matthew pointed to the sunrise and told Mingyi to look. She looked over, admired it, and turned back to Matthew....to find him on one knee with the most perfect ring they had picked out together! She was shocked, in the best way. And as you all know, she said yes :)
