How We Met

On January 30, 2015, I told my friends that I was going to Boots (a dive bar) in Oakland because I was going to meet my husband. I met Joel at Boots that night when a mutual friend introduced us to each other. We hit it off, but Joel found out that I was moving to Richmond, VA for law school in a couple of months and he was put off by the long distance. Luckily, I was persistent and made a case for why we should be together and the rest is history! -Sarah

How I proposed

October 15, 2017

Conquering the whole "long distance thing" through Sarah being away at law school was made possible, in part, by her and my ability to remind ourselves of our plans and expectations for each other in the future. Long before she said yes, Sarah and I knew where our relationship was heading... thats right, working all day and having two dogs and a cat who do their best to keep us busy at all times at night... But all jokes aside, asking Sarah to marry me was one of, if not the, most important decisions I have ever made, and I could not be happier with the result. To her credit, Sarah poured tirelessly over engagement ring searching, (I know, poor her, right?) to the point where all I had to do was go to the store, point and say, "I want that one." Surprisingly the more difficult part though, was the act itself. It should have been easier, seeing as how Sarah was actually the one who delivered the ring from Richmond to Pittsburgh, but mustering up the courage to do it was quite stressful. After a day where the two of us enjoyed a lunch date downtown, where Sarah asked about a thousand times, "if I was gonna ask her," we returned back home where she finally gave up, defeated. But it was there, where the two of us had some privacy (aside from Mack doing his best to sneak between us), that I finally got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Her first response was to ask me to cry, but I had already started. (for the record, I was simply tearing up a little, respectfully) She then answered "yes," and we went out to celebrate with friends, thus marking the beginning of a new chapter of our lives together. I am so thankful for her, and look forward to the many more emotional moments we will share in our lives together. -Joel
