We see betrothal in several places in the Bible, but one that comes to the minds of most when another mentions this ancient tradition is the story of Mary and Joseph. “and to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Miriam.” Luke 1:27 The major difference between Betrothal and engagement or even dating is legal and binding commitment. It is a physical ceremony that indicates to the parties involved and also to the world that a young man and a young woman are ready for marriage and to pursue their partner to be; fully and within the bounds of safety, through legal commitment, while the bridegroom prepares a home for his bride and the bride prepares herself for the wedding and for their wedding feast!
We as the Church and Body of believers are currently in the betrothal period with our Bridegroom Yeshua (Jesus). Yeshua came to earth to give His life for us so that He could Redeem His people to Himself. We are a people redeemed but not yet restored. Within the Betrothal process it is customary for the Bride and Groom to separate; during this period the Groom prepares a place for His bride to abide with Him. We as the church are now watching and waiting to hear the sound of the Shofar (trumpet) blast and to see Yeshua (Jesus) return and take us to the Wedding feast, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. And this brings me to the question, if you're married at Betrothal...why have a wedding? The wedding's primary purpose is for friends and loved ones to come together and celebrate the coming together of the Betrothed couple and to participate in rejoicing with them that the time has come, they have made themselves ready, and are coming together! We want you to be apart of our lives!
