Mildred and Grant's story first began in 2017 as first-year students at Rhodes college. As fellow Clarence Day scholars, the two of them shared a passion for making an impact in their beloved hometown of Memphis. After navigating orientation and the first few weeks of college, what began as a casual acquaintance soon turned into genuine friendship. Mildred and Grant remained close friends throughout college, sharing long hours together at the cafeteria, in the library, at social events, and the occasional wine and movie night with their friends. However, after a COVID-graduation ceremony in 2021, the two friends began their own paths in different cities as Grant set off for Washington, DC for a new job while Mildred was excited to begin her new career journey in Memphis. Despite living far away, Grant would return to Memphis for holidays to visit his family and friends, including Mildred whenever he could. As time passed, Mildred and Grant's relationship deepened and the two began dating. Though separated by nearly 800 miles, Grant and Mildred remained committed to one another and their long-distance relationship. Over the course of two years, Grant and Mildred took turns booking flights to visit one another. Washington, DC became a special place for the two where they loved to explore museums, try new cuisines, and immerse themselves in the city that Grant now called home. After a couple of years of back and forth flights and long FaceTime calls, the two were finally reunited again in Memphis when Grant decided to return home. In Memphis, Grant and Mildred's relationship continued to blossom and grow with each realizing that they wanted to spend forever with each other. On September 6, 2025, Grant took Mildred back to Rhodes College, the site they first met, and asked Mildred to be his wife.
