We highly recommend visiting the Colonial Zone or Colonial City in Santo Domingo. It is the first city built in the Americas by the Europeans after the colonization. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here you will find different places built by the Spaniards during the colonial era, which together form more than 300 historical sites in the area, including several monuments of cultural and historical character. You can take a walking guided tour of the Colonial Zone or rent a bike and ride around! Once in the Colonial City, there's an array of awesome colonial-style restaurants and bars in the area. We specifically recommend visiting the restaurants located at Calle de las Atarazanas for delicious meals in a colonial and historical environment.
