Flight

Airport Options

LISBON The Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport) is the major Portugal hub. It is a little less than 3 hours from Lisbon to Lagos by car. For our friends/family coming from America this is likely the easiest/most affordable option. To get from Lisbon to Lagos, car rentals are a good option so you can explore along the way - see below for more information as well as other options. FARO Faro International Airport is a smaller airport that services the Algarve Coast. It is approximately one hour from Lagos by car. This is a good option for our British friends/family, most UK cities have nonstop flight options to this airport. Lots of ways to get from Faro to Lagos - rental car, train, bus, taxi or shuttle. From May 2025 United Airlines will provide direct flights from Newark to Faro starting May 2025. The service is scheduled to run four times a week until 23 September 2025.

Rental Car

Car Rental

Rentals are pretty affordable and Portugal is generally considered relatively easy to navigate with well-maintained & well-marked roads. Be aware that there are toll roads driving down from Lisbon - your car rental will most likely come with a transponder to automically pay the tolls, but it is worth double checking when you pick it up. In terms of parking, there is plenty of free and paid parking available in Lagos but check with your accommodation. Check out rentalcars.com (link below) for a range of affordable rental options. Just a heads-up: some of the cheaper deals require a large deposit or come with high deductibles (called “excess” in the UK) if the car gets damaged. You can protect yourself with rental car excess insurance at https://carhireexcess.com, which is often cheaper than what the rental companies charge.

Rental Car

Luz Car

If hiring a car from Faro airport, Luzcar (Luzcar) is highly recommended. Although the price may be slightly higher there is no deposit or excess charge. The price quoted is inclusive of CDW (collision damage waiver), unlimited mileage, additional drivers and child seats. There are no hidden costs, the car can be collected / returned at Faro airport or Lagos and it is a Portuguese family business.

Train

Trains to Lagos

It is possible to take the train from Lisbon to Lagos but the journey does involve a change, and takes about 4-5 hours depending on connections. For people flying into Faro, there is a train to Lagos that runs frequently and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. CP (Comboios de Portugal) operates the train services throughout Portugal, including the Algarve, click below to book tickets via their website.

Travel Note

Airport Transfers from Faro

If you are not planning on driving and flying into Faro, Yellowfish offer an airport transfer service to take you to your accomodation.
