I first met Mikayla searching for apartments in Norman, Oklahoma. Little did I know, the girl giving me an apartment tour wouldn’t just be my property manager—she’d also be my future wife, and the mother of my son. What led to that tour? Well, a dead rabbit floating in the community pool of the previous apartment I toured down the street (and their ridiculous prices). But we weren’t madly in love at first sight on that tour. That brewed a few months later whenever I came to her office to ask about a garage for my truck (I’d seen how other cars faired against Oklahoma hail). What I didn’t anticipate before that conversation was getting a crush on my property manager through talking about our love for different country artists. After that, it was a lot harder to read for Property law whenever all I could think about was finding the best songs to share with Mikayla. Property law was already difficult enough to read, too. But nothing was difficult about Mikayla. Every conversation after that day showed that. She made me feel like myself again. She wasn’t material and complicated like the rest of the world. I knew that because I asked her out to dinner by giving her flowers and gingerbread cookies. She cried (happy tears). And that night we told each other “I love you”—we both knew immediately that we were meant for each other. Whenever I visited my parents a week later, I told them that I met my future wife. They weren’t so sure when I told them she was a Packers fan. I know telling my parents that probably made me sound insane, and anyone else watching this play out probably thought the same. But from my perspective, there was never a question that she was who I wanted to spend the rest of my life making smile. To add a little craziness to our story, after eight months of dating, we found out we were pregnant. It’s safe to say we were both completely shocked, scared, and unsure of what the future would look like. But even in the middle of all those emotions, we knew that God had a bigger plan for us. What felt unexpected at first quickly became the greatest blessing we could have ever imagined. On March 27th, we welcomed Graham into the world, and from that moment on, everything changed. We experienced a whole new kind of love — the love of a parent. Graham has brought so much joy, purpose, and laughter into our lives, and he has made our love for each other even stronger. Watching Mikayla become a mother has been one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed. The way she loves, cares, and sacrifices for Graham has made me fall even more in love with her. Through every new season, challenge, and milestone, we have grown together in ways we never expected. Our story may not have followed the exact timeline we once imagined, but it has become something even better. We know this is only the beginning, and we are so excited for everything ahead. We hope you’ll be there to continue being a part of this crazy, beautiful story with us.
