How We Met

Family, Friends, and Faith in a Matchmaker

It's March, 2020. What's the best way for two cousins to avoid going stir crazy during the COVID lockdown? A trip to Flagstaff, of course! Kenzie and her cousin, Joshua, escaped town to get a taste of good weather at Alex Szafranski's house. It was a “let’s do anything” kind of weekend. Little did Kenzie know, her future husband was about to walk into her life in the most unexpected way. Miguel, Alex’s college roommate and certified, all-around good guy, came by to pick up his bed. Nothing says "I'm a responsible adult." like picking up your own furniture. He was irresistible. Miguel didn't know it then, but his future wife was sitting on the couch, teaching him how to play a family game, that would become a tradition in his home. Over their short visit, there was a little flirting, but no exchanging numbers. Just a friendly greeting. Sometimes, that's all that's needed. A couple of months later, the Fourth of July BBQ rolled around. Alex casually mentioned that she had someone in mind to set Kenzie up with. "Fair warning," she cautioned, “He’s full of dad jokes, but you might like him.” Alex, the ever faithful match maker, didn't know how right she was. There was a date arranged. A restaurant picked. Miguel and Kenzie had never been on a blind date before. Kenzie was sitting at the revolving sushi counter when Miguel walked in and then it clicked! The guy from Flagstaff! The dad joke guy, was the one Alex had in mind. Miguel saw her sitting away from the door, and when Kenzie turned to face him, he immediately thought to himself, "This girl is waaaaaaaaay out of my league." Kenzie was thinking, “How am I sitting across from someone this amazing?” (Spoiler alert: They were both thinking the exact same thing.) They spent the evening laughing, talking, and realizing that sometimes the best connections come from a couple of random moments, a touch of fate, and, yes, a lot of cheesy jokes. That day, Miguel took Kenzie home to meet his "roommates" (really, they were his parents), Martha and Gus. Because when you know, you know. Now, here they are, planning their wedding, all because of a handful of perfectly timed moments and probably a dad joke or two along the way.
