In the most unlikely of places, Sloan and Michael met in the swamp that is online dating: Phoenix Bumble. They exchanged a few dad jokes (Michael's specialty), common interests, and their unique paths that bought them to the Desert. After ordering the same beer and fish tacos on their 1st date, they realized that this was much more than the odd encounters and terrible 1st dates they had experienced in the past. Or maybe it was their waiter that said they should star in their own buddy-cop duo TV show. Or the random strangers on the street that commented on their cuteness as they walked hand-in-hand to the train stop. They explored Phoenix, bonded over music, and their future desire to not live forever under the Arizona fire.
Months later, Sloan got an amazing job offer to move back home to San Francisco. She knew that their story wasn't over and thought "what if I asked Michael to come with me!" Michael said he didn't want to break up and didn't want to do distance. Trying to stay calm, Sloan agreed and they began to plan out their move to the Bay Area. Although many provided passive aggressive "good lucks" and "Michael will have a couch to crash on if this doesn't work out", Sloan and Michael knew that this was something special. In the words of Matt Damon and Robin Williams from Good Will Hunting (and Michael's Instagram post), he quit his job and had to go see about a girl.
3 years, 4 apartments, and a pandemic later, at the top of Alta Plaza at sunset, Michael told Sloan he had a surprise for her. She then asked, in true Sloan-fashion, “Is it candy?” (it was, in fact, not candy). Michael pulled out a palm-sized box, opened it up, and said the sweetest words to Sloan. Sloan proceeded to blackout from the shock and love. Returning to consciousness, Sloan said - YES! (duh) as they celebrated the rest of the night with sparkling wine & truffle pasta.
