Our story happened because we were in the right place at the right time. Michaela lived in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, from July 2017 to February 2019 while volunteering at an orphanage, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. Carlos, born and raised in the Dominican Republic, was living in the capital, Santo Domingo, at that time while studying medicine. In September 2018, Michaela and her friends, who originally planned to go to the beach for the weekend, decided to change their plans and explore the mountainous town of Jarabacoa, in the heart of the Dominican Republic. Unknowingly, while Michaela and her friends were visiting some popular areas of the town, Carlos and his uncle, Carlos Alberto, were off adventuring on motocross in the same mountains. When Michaela and her friends returned to the hostel, they noticed someone reading a book in English while sitting in the living room. They started a conversation and discovered that this person wasn’t alone; he was there with his nephew, who was still out riding. An hour later, Carlos returned to the hostel, and after an introduction to which he attributes to Michaela's first spark of interest, they went to pick up his brother at the bus station. That night, Carlos, his uncle, his brother Javier, Michaela, and her friends went to the small town of Jarabacoa to experience the nightlife it had to offer, which was undeniably Dominican. After dancing merengue and bachata, it was time to return to the hostel; Michaela and Carlos spent hours talking on the rooftop under the stars. The next morning, before parting ways, Michaela and Carlos exchanged numbers to stay in touch. From then on, Michaela and Carlos would meet in Santo Domingo during their free weekends. Eventually, this incredible shared experience came to an end: Michaela left the Dominican Republic to start graduate school in New Orleans, and Carlos was finishing medical school. Since 2018, over the years, they kept in touch until one weekend, a couple of years later, when Michaela visited the Dominican Republic, they decided to spend two consecutive weekends together. That same year, when Carlos visited his family in New York, Michaela met up with him. They later met in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Soon after, Michaela moved back to the Dominican Republic. After living together for a year in the Dominican Republic, Carlos and Michaela moved to Pittsburgh. They lived in Pittsburgh for about a year until they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where they currently reside. This story has continued to grow every day and has developed into the reason that brings them to this moment.

Nuestra historia ocurrió porque estábamos en el lugar indicado, en el momento adecuado. Michaela vivió en San Pedro de Macorís, República Dominicana, desde julio de 2017 hasta febrero de 2019, mientras realizaba un voluntariado en un orfanato llamado Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. Carlos, nacido y criado en la República Dominicana, en ese momento vivía en la capital, Santo Domingo, mientras cursaba sus estudios de medicina. Una hora después, Carlos regresó al albergue y, tras una introducción —a la que él atribuye el primer flechazo de Michaela—, se fueron a buscar a su hermano a la estación del bus. Carlos, su tío, su hermano Javier, Michaela y sus amigas fueron esa noche al pequeño pueblo de Jarabacoa para experimentar la vida nocturna que el lugar tenía para ofrecer, muy dominicana, sin duda. Después de bailar merengue y bachata, era hora de regresar al albergue; Michaela y Carlos pasaron horas hablando en el techo bajo las estrellas. A la mañana siguiente, antes de partir, Michaela y Carlos intercambiaron números para mantenerse en contacto. Desde entonces, Michaela y Carlos se veían en Santo Domingo durante sus fines de semana libres. Más tarde, esta increíble experiencia compartida llegó a su fin: Michaela dejó la República Dominicana para comenzar la escuela de posgrado en Nueva Orleans, y Carlos estaba terminando la escuela de medicina. Desde 2018, a lo largo de los años, se mantuvieron en contacto hasta que, un fin de semana en que Michaela visitaba la República Dominicana un par de años después, decidieron pasar dos fines de semana seguidos juntos. Ese mismo año, cuando Carlos visitaba a su familia en Nueva York, Michaela se reunió con él. Luego se encontraron en Filadelfia y en Pittsburgh. Poco después, Michaela se mudó de nuevo a la República Dominicana. Después de vivir juntos un año en la República Dominicana, Carlos y Michaela se mudaron a Pittsburgh. Vivieron en Pittsburgh durante aproximadamente un año, hasta que se mudaron a Rochester, Minnesota, donde actualmente residen. Esta historia ha seguido creciendo cada día y se ha desarrollado hasta convertirse en la razón que los trae a este momento.
