We met as RAs at UNC's Olde Campus Lower Quad (OCLQ for short). Him in Graham with Hawaiian sheets and smiley faced pajamas. Her in Lewis with cat pictures and a huge crush. ∞ There were lots of late nights, which involved walking around the quad at 2am and making sure nobody had set fire to the dorm. Every Wednesday morning, Michael would miss his 9am econ class because he was up late, attempting to impress Laura at karaoke on Tuesday nights. There was at least one RA work meeting where Michael didn't catch a word of what was said, because he was too busy making eyes at Laura. ∞ In short, it was romance from that first flirtatious autumn in Chapel Hill, though it took at least 6 months for us to work up the courage to let our boss know.
Collectively, we have lived in four dorm rooms, two apartments, and four houses, in four different cities across North Carolina. We moved a lot, but we always came back to each other. ∞ One of us earned a Master's degree in Social Work, and the other earned a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. We learned more about each other every day. ∞ Each of us traveled to places near and far, and one of us walked over 1,000 miles from Georgia to West Virginia. We journeyed closer to the rest of our lives together.
Everyone wants to know the story. Everyone is ready to hear of the grand romantic gestures, the surprise, the champagne, and the roses. We kept it simple. ∞ Basically, once Michael had the ring he couldn't wait one minute longer. He walked in the house late on a Friday and found Laura sitting in her robe. He got down on one knee and, many happy tears later, we were engaged.
